SAT Question of the Day Explained – December 2, 2014 – Identifying Sentence Errors

Kafka in 1917

Today’s SAT question of the day is an identifying sentence errors question about pronouns and Franz Kafka.

The credit for making Franz Kafka internationally famous as a writer belongs to his friend, novelist Max Brod, which despite Kafka’s dying wishes, edited Kafka’s unpublished manuscripts and then had them published.

Do you hear the error? If you don’t hear it, check each and every answer choice systematically.  “Credit for making” is fine, as is “famous as a writer”.  What does “which” refer to? It looks like it refers to Max Brod…and Max is a person.  Therefore, that “which” needs to be “who”. (Sneaky little pronouns! One of the most commonly tested topics on the SAT writing multiple choice sections!)

Remember, if you don’t hear the error when you first read the sentence, check every answer choice…especially the verbs, pronouns, and modifiers.
