Today’s ACT question of the day is from the English passage about baseball. We need to fix the underlined part of the sentence below (so ignore the other, non-underlined error).
When Hank Aaron stretched out a sinewy arm to pull one down, striding up to a rack of ash-hewn bats, he became a modern-day knight selecting their lance.
We have two events: striding to the rack, and pulling down a bat. Logically, striding has to happen first – he can’t take a bat from the rack if he’s not at the rack.
Our correct answer choice also needs to relate these ideas to each other correctly: he strides to the rack and stretches out his arm to pull down a bat.
Choice B works perfectly – “strode up to a rack of ash-hewn bats, stretching out a sinewy arm to pull one down,” – because it puts the ideas in the right order and with the right relationship.
