SAT Question of the Day Explained – March 1, 2014 – Identifying Sentence Errors

Definitely not pigs.

Today’s SAT question of the day is an identifying sentence errors question about guinea pigs. Let’s keep things ro…dent…ling right along and listen to hear if we note any issues as we read the sentence.Section A is fine – “its” corresponds correctly to “the guinea pig”.  Section B is fine because things can be members of families – those words are used correctly.  Section C is tricker – the guinea pig is not a pig but a rodent.  This is correct even if it sounds like you need a “but rather” or “but instead” in there – “but” can stand on its own. It’s not an error, but a correct usage.

Moving on to section D: the guinea pig is a rodent from the Andes. “From” fits just fine here. So, for the first time all year, we have a sentence with no error. They do exist, so don’t be scared to choose E if you systematically re-check all the underlined sections and find no error!
