ACT Question of the Day Explained – January 28, 2014 – Science

Today’s ACT science question of the day brings us back to the stick we met four days ago.  This time, instead of looking for data in the charts, we are asked about something relating to the scientific method.

They would like to know what remains constant in all of the experiments – in other words, we are looking for something that is part of the setup, definitely not one of the variables that is being measured.

We are measuring the shadow length and direction each day, so those can’t be it.  The day of the year changes, too, since there are three days in each chart.  Out of the given choices, the only thing that doesn’t change is the amount of stick that is exposed: F.

Where to find the information to solve this question:

  • Description of experiment 1 – the student sets up the stick and doesn’t move it
  • Charts – they show measurements for direction and length that are different, as well as different days on which measurements were taken
