ACT Question of the Day Explained – March 3, 2014 – Math, Algebra, Lines

Today’s ACT question of the day wants us to find the slope of the line described by this equation:

3x = 10 – 5y

Sadly, it’s not just pointing to a number – we have to convert this to y = mx + b format.

First, I’m going to flip the whole thing:

10 – 5y = 3x

Then, I’m going to get y alone:

-5y = 3x – 10

y = -3x/5 – 2

The slope (m) is the coefficient of x.  In this case, it’s -3/5 (B).
