SAT Question of the Day Explained – February 25, 2014 – Sentence Completion

Paul Bowles, author, composer, and translator

Today’s SAT question of the day is a medium-difficulty sentence completion.  We learn that Paul Bowles wrote a lot of music, but his writing career received more acclaim.

My prediction for this question was that his music “was secondary to” his writing. That matches the right answer, C, overshadowed by.

  •  demolished by would mean it was destroyed by his writing
  • paramount to would mean that it was more important than his writing
  • adjacent to would mean that it was near or next to his writing
  • precluded by would mean that his writing kept him from making music

Lots of good vocabulary in these answer choices – nothing from the top 100, but good words to know for the reading section and for your essay!
